He graduated summa cum laude. He went on to complete his minimally invasive bariatric-metabolic surgery training at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City and at the Hospital Saint-Pierre in Brussels. He earned a master’s degree in bariatric-metabolic surgery at the University Federico II of Naples, graduating summa cum laude.Training & Employment: He performed his first surgery to treat obesity, a gastric banding procedure, in 1993, and soon standardized the laparoscopic approach, developing one-day surgery and single-incision surgery protocols. Dr. De Luca has been involved in study protocols on gastric banding, gastric pacemakers and double balloon procedures. He is currently coordinator of multicenter study protocols for two innovative interventions: SAGI (Single Anastomosis Gastro-Ileal), an MGB/OAGB variant, and SAJI (Single Anastomosis Jejuno-Ileal), indicated in case of bypass failure and also a malabsorbitive procedure.Dr. De Luca has performed more than 8,000 bariatric-metabolic procedures, especially restoration, revision and conversion surgeries. The obesity centers Dr De Luca directs have been certified ‚ÄúCenters of Excellence‚Äù SICOB. Since 2008, he has served on the board of SICOB as secretary, IFSO managing director, and vice president.He is the author of 290 articles. He serves on the editorial board of ‚ÄúObesity Surgery‚Äù, ‚ÄúSurgery for Obesity and Related Diseases‚Äù, ‚ÄúSurgical Endoscopy‚Äù and ‚ÄúUpdate to Surgery‚Äù. He has authored and directed SICOB‚Äôs 2008 and 2016 and 2023 Italian guidelines on MBS.He also has authored the guidelines on MBS for the European Association Endoscopic Surgery (EAES) Society, published 2020, and ASMBS/IFSO guidelines published 2022.
