Description
A patient’s transformation after MBS impacts multiple organ systems and multiple interconnected family, work, and social systems. This symposium will introduce themes that arise during existing groups and foster enhanced skills in handling group issues. This symposium will offer both didactic and interactive presentations, and an opportunity for attendees to discuss specific group problems they are facing during a mock group session. We will also feature a panel of speakers, who will share their lived-experiences as dual MBS patients and MBS IH clinicians. Individuals from any multidisciplinary specialty currently involved in running bariatric support groups would be appropriate for this session.
Learning Objectives
- Understand the lived experience of "bariatric patient" becoming bariatric staff, and the complexity and ease of managing dual roles.
- Identify strategies to help patients discern pros and cons of social media support groups.
- Explain how body positivity and obesity treatment interact.
- Describe ways to increase attendance and revitalize groups.
- Implement strategies to help patients and their families meet nutrition goals
