Biography

"Surendra Ugale, is the Director, Dept. of Bariatric & Metabolic Surgery, at Kirloskar hospital, Hyderabad, and Visiting Consultant in Kolkata, Goa, Mumbai and Belagavi. He was the 1st person to start laparoscopic surgery in South India in 1991; subsequently helped spread it to many parts of India and abroad, always promoting a Team approach.

His team Ugale Bariatrics, is the 2nd in the world to start Laparoscopic Ileal Interposition for Type-2 Diabetes in 2008; then trained surgeons in Turkey, Georgia, Iran, Mexico and Russia.
He also introduced a new scoring system, Diabetes Severity & Remission Score, in 2013.
His work is now especially focused on Metabolic Surgery for Diabetes & Obesity and he is a proctor at national and international centers, having 44 publications (36- Metabolic and Bariatric surgery) and 8 Book chapters in national and international journals and books.
Society of American Gastrointestinal & Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) has given him the "International Ambassador Award" in 2020.
Also received the "Great Contributor Award" for Pioneering work and completing 30 years of Laparoscopic Surgery in India, from Association of Minimal Access Surgeons of India (AMASI) in Nov.2021.
He has been appointed Associate Editor of Journal of Bariatric Surgery (JBS) and was Chairman of the Central Scientific Committee of the Obesity Surgery Society of India (OSSI) from Feb. 2022-2024.

Although trained in Western Medicine and Allopathy, he has always believed in mind-body wellness, ancient Indian medicine, yoga, pranayama and meditation, with emphasis on natural methods for healing, and has embarked on a path of Integrated HealthCare, in addition to his surgical work.
